Background of the study
This study assesses the use of multimodal interpretation in Efik language radio broadcasts in Calabar, focusing on how interpreters integrate auditory, textual, and visual cues to enhance message delivery. In a diverse media landscape, radio remains a vital source of information and cultural expression. Efik radio broadcasts, in particular, rely on interpretation to reach both native speakers and broader audiences (Etim, 2023). Multimodal interpretation involves the simultaneous use of verbal translation along with supplementary textual or visual aids to clarify complex information. The study reviews current practices in Efik radio, employing observations of live broadcasts, interviews with interpreters, and audience surveys. It examines how multimodal strategies can improve comprehension, mitigate ambiguities, and reinforce cultural identity in radio communication. Additionally, the research explores the challenges faced by interpreters in coordinating different modes of communication, including technical constraints and varying listener preferences. By analyzing these factors, the study aims to provide recommendations for enhancing the effectiveness of multimodal interpretation in Efik radio broadcasts, ultimately contributing to better information dissemination and cultural preservation (Etim, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Multimodal interpretation in Efik language radio broadcasts faces several challenges that hinder effective communication. Inconsistencies in the synchronization of auditory and visual/textual elements, technical limitations, and the lack of standardized practices contribute to misunderstandings and reduced listener engagement (Etim, 2023). These issues are further compounded by limited training opportunities for interpreters in using multimodal techniques, which can lead to fragmented and unclear broadcasts. This study seeks to identify the specific challenges associated with multimodal interpretation in Efik radio and evaluate their impact on broadcast quality. The goal is to propose strategies for standardizing multimodal practices and enhancing interpreter performance in order to improve overall communication effectiveness (Etim, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
To assess current multimodal interpretation practices in Efik radio broadcasts.
To identify challenges affecting interpretation quality.
To propose strategies for enhancing multimodal interpretation.
Research questions:
What multimodal techniques are currently used in Efik radio broadcasts?
What challenges impact the effectiveness of these techniques?
How can multimodal interpretation practices be improved?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the effectiveness of multimodal interpretation in Efik radio broadcasts, providing insights that can enhance communication quality and listener engagement. The findings will benefit broadcasters, interpreters, and media regulators by establishing best practices that ensure clear and culturally resonant messages (Etim, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to assessing multimodal interpretation in Efik language radio broadcasts in Calabar, focusing on selected stations and broadcast segments.
Definitions of terms:
Multimodal interpretation: The integration of multiple communication modes, such as auditory and visual cues, in translation.
Radio broadcasts: Audio transmissions distributed via radio channels.
Interpretation quality: The accuracy and clarity of the interpreted message.
